Casa Del Sonder
Guesthouses & B&Bs Β· Bo-Kaap
Six-room restored guesthouse on the Bo-Kaap fringe, co-founded by local restaurateur Michelle alongside the neighbouring Sonder Cafe.
Six stops in the oldest residential quarter in Cape Town, laid out as a day rather than a map: bakery first, the quarter across the middle of it, and the walk back out onto Buitengracht once the music starts. Barely more than a kilometre end to end, so the walking is the smallest part of it, and it is deliberately not a list of everywhere you could eat here. This is a neighbourhood people live in β the streets are narrow, the houses are private, and the photographs are of the doorways, not through them.

Six-room restored guesthouse on the Bo-Kaap fringe, co-founded by local restaurateur Michelle alongside the neighbouring Sonder Cafe.
Curator's tip
Start at the top of Hudson Street. Staying here puts the whole route outside your door, and the walk down into the quarter is the introduction.
Bakeries Β· Bo-Kaap
Independently owned artisan sourdough bakery founded on Rose Street in Bo-Kaap, with two small sibling outposts in Gardens and the CBD.
Curator's tip
Down onto Rose Street, early. The bakery shuts at four and at two on a Saturday, so this is a first stop or it is not a stop at all.
Gifts & Crafts Β· Bo-Kaap
Shop and gallery in Schotsche Kloof celebrating local artists and makers, stocking homeware, antiques and handwoven textiles.
Curator's tip
Over on Church Street once the morning has loosened up. Ceramics and homeware β the stop on this route most likely to cost you luggage space.
Restaurants Β· Bo-Kaap
Halal Cape Malay restaurant in the heart of Bo-Kaap, family-run for more than 40 years.
Curator's tip
Lunch, on the Wale Street corner at Pentz, where the route flattens out. If it is full, Bo-Kaap Kombuis is five minutes uphill on August Street and looks back over the city instead.
Live Music Β· Bo-Kaap
Independent 220-seat Bo-Kaap restaurant and bar with nightly African live music, from marimbas to jazz.
Curator's tip
Back up to Rose Lane for the evening. Live music most nights, so check what is on before you build the end of the day around it.
Sports Bars Β· Bo-Kaap
One of Cape Town's oldest pubs, dating to 1864, with a traditional British-pub feel and a sports-team theme.
Curator's tip
Finish on the Buitengracht corner, where the Bo-Kaap meets the city and the walk hands you back to it. Open until midnight, which is the point of putting it last.
