The oldest wine-producing valley in the country, inside the city limits and about twenty-five minutes from the CBD. Six estates and a deli, driven rather than walked: down off Constantia Nek, along Klein Constantia Road, and out onto Constantia Main. This is an expensive day — every stop on it sits in our top price band — and it is a driving route, so either nominate someone or book a tour operator. The Constantia Wine Tour runs this valley if you would rather not. Treat the five estates as a menu rather than a checklist: pick two or three, taste properly at those, and finish at the deli. Nobody who has done all five in one afternoon remembers the last two.

Start high, on Constantia Nek Road. Coming down the valley rather than up it means the views arrive early and the driving gets easier as the day goes on.

South Africa's oldest wine estate (established 1685), a National Monument and heritage site now held in trust by the state rather than privately owned — included as a flagged exception given its irreplaceable status as the origin of the Constantia wine route.

The oldest estate in the valley and the busiest. Go earlier in the day if you want the grounds to yourself, later if you do not mind company.
