Export driving route

The oldest wine-producing valley in the country, inside the city limits and about twenty-five minutes from the CBD. Six estates and a deli, driven rather than walked: down off Constantia Nek, along Klein Constantia Road, and out onto Constantia Main. This is an expensive day β€” every stop on it sits in our top price band β€” and it is a driving route, so either nominate someone or book a tour operator. The Constantia Wine Tour runs this valley if you would rather not. Treat the five estates as a menu rather than a checklist: pick two or three, taste properly at those, and finish at the deli. Nobody who has done all five in one afternoon remembers the last two.

  1. Eagles' Nest

    Wine Farms Β· Constantia

Small family-owned wine farm on Constantia Nek, run as a single estate rather than a multi-brand group.

    RRR

    Curator's tip

Start high, on Constantia Nek Road. Coming down the valley rather than up it means the views arrive early and the driving gets easier as the day goes on.

  2. Beau Constantia

    Wine Farms Β· Constantia

Boutique 22-hectare family-owned wine farm bought by the Du Preez family in 2002, ranked among the world's top 50 wine producers in 2025.

    RRR

    Curator's tip

Also on the Nek, a little further along. Small site, big outlook; book if you want to eat rather than only taste.

  3. Klein Constantia

    Wine Farms Β· Constantia

Historic Constantia wine estate privately owned by Zdenek Bakala and Charles Harman since 2011, home to the legendary Vin de Constance dessert wine.

    RRR

    Curator's tip

Down into Klein Constantia Road. The dessert wine is what this estate is known for, and it is the one bottle on this route worth the luggage.

  4. Buitenverwachting

    Wine Farms Β· Constantia

Independently owned Constantia wine estate, privately held by Lars Maack, set on a 300-year-old farm at the foot of the Constantiaberg.

    RRR

    Curator's tip

Same road, further down. The drive in is long enough to feel like arriving somewhere, which is not true of every stop here.

  5. Groot Constantia

    Wine Farms Β· Constantia

South Africa's oldest wine estate (established 1685), a National Monument and heritage site now held in trust by the state rather than privately owned β€” included as a flagged exception given its irreplaceable status as the origin of the Constantia wine route.

    RRR

    Curator's tip

The oldest estate in the valley and the busiest. Go earlier in the day if you want the grounds to yourself, later if you do not mind company.

  6. Chardonnay Deli Constantia

    Food Markets Β· Constantia

Upmarket independent farm stall, bakery and deli on Constantia Main Road, opened in 2014 by owner Charmaine Lilje.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Finish on Constantia Main Road with food rather than wine. A deli is the right last stop on a route where nobody should be tasting any more.
