Surfers Corner itself. Lessons and board hire — the stop to book ahead if surfing is the reason you came, and the last one before the road turns south.

Into Kalk Bay on Main Road. Park once here: everything else in this village is within two hundred metres, and the parking gets worse after eleven.

Still Main Road. No bookings, so the queue is the price of admission — send someone ahead while the rest of you look at the shops.

Upstairs in the Olympia Buildings, above the bakery. Easy to miss from the pavement — look for the stairs.

Main Road again. The Kalk Bay stretch is antique shops and galleries end to end; this is the one to start with if you only do one.

Down in the harbour itself. Fish and chips on a plastic table with the boats coming in. Fish Hoek Fisheries and the Salty Sea Dog further down the line both have their partisans, but if you are only stopping once, stop here.

On the beach at Fish Hoek. The flattest, calmest swimming on this coast is right here, which is why the tables face that way — the one stop on the route where the point is to sit still.

Out along Secluse Avenue, and the end of the drive. Leave Fish Hoek by half past three: the Boulders gate closes at five, and a coast road that delivers you to a locked penguin colony has wasted your whole day. Our Simon's Town walk picks up here if the light has held.
