10 stops ~15.7 km
Export driving route

Down the warm side of the peninsula, from the surf at Muizenberg to the penguins at Boulders. Ten stops and about sixteen kilometres of coast road, which makes this a full day and a driving route rather than a walk. Each village is walkable once you park, and Kalk Bay in particular is best done on foot β€” five of these stops sit within two hundred metres of each other there. It ends where our Simon's Town walk begins, so pick that one up at Boulders if you still have an afternoon left. The railway runs the whole way if you would rather not drive.

    Empire Cafe Details verified

    Coffee Shops Β· Muizenberg

Long-running independent cafΓ© on York Road, Muizenberg, in a double-volume vintage building, popular for breakfast and lunch.

    RR

    Curator's tip

York Road, above the station. The first coffee of the route, and early enough in the morning to still watch the surf go out.

  2. The Corner Surf Shop

    Clothing Β· Muizenberg

Africa's oldest surf shop, trading on Muizenberg's Beach Road for over 50 years.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Down on Beach Road. Muizenberg is where most of Cape Town learned to surf, and this stretch is why.

  3. Surf Emporium

    Tour Operators Β· Muizenberg

Independent surf and SUP school, equipment rental hub and retailer at Surfers Corner, Muizenberg beachfront.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Surfers Corner itself. Lessons and board hire β€” the stop to book ahead if surfing is the reason you came, and the last one before the road turns south.

  4. Harbour House

    Restaurants Β· Kalk Bay

Seafood restaurant in Kalk Bay's historic working fishing harbour, sourcing line fish from its own boat.

    RRR

    Curator's tip

Into Kalk Bay on Main Road. Park once here: everything else in this village is within two hundred metres, and the parking gets worse after eleven.

  5. Closed

Olympia CafΓ© & Deli Details verified

    Bakeries Β· Kalk Bay

Long-running cafΓ© and deli on Kalk Bay's Main Road, a former fish-and-bait shop turned local institution.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Still Main Road. No bookings, so the queue is the price of admission β€” send someone ahead while the rest of you look at the shops.

  6. Kalk Bay Modern

Gifts & Crafts Β· Kalk Bay

Independent fine art and craft gallery on the first floor of the Olympia Buildings, Kalk Bay Main Road.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Upstairs in the Olympia Buildings, above the bakery. Easy to miss from the pavement β€” look for the stairs.

  7. Closed

    Artvark Gallery Details verified

    Art Galleries Β· Kalk Bay

The first art gallery to open in Kalk Bay, established 1998, on the village's Main Road.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Main Road again. The Kalk Bay stretch is antique shops and galleries end to end; this is the one to start with if you only do one.

  8. Closed

    Kalky's Details verified

    Takeaways Β· Kalk Bay

Long-standing beachside fish takeaway below Harbour House at Kalk Bay harbour.

    R

    Curator's tip

Down in the harbour itself. Fish and chips on a plastic table with the boats coming in. Fish Hoek Fisheries and the Salty Sea Dog further down the line both have their partisans, but if you are only stopping once, stop here.

  9. Curator's tip

On the beach at Fish Hoek. The flattest, calmest swimming on this coast is right here, which is why the tables face that way β€” the one stop on the route where the point is to sit still.

  10. Closed

    Boulders Beach Lodge Details verified

    Guesthouses & B&Bs Β· Simon's Town

Independent guesthouse and restaurant on Secluse Avenue, near Boulders Beach, Simon's Town.

    RR

    Curator's tip

Out along Secluse Avenue, and the end of the drive. Leave Fish Hoek by half past three: the Boulders gate closes at five, and a coast road that delivers you to a locked penguin colony has wasted your whole day. Our Simon's Town walk picks up here if the light has held.
