Black Betty works on Hout Street in the CBD and makes demi-fine jewellery by hand — the band between costume and fine, where the metal is real and the pieces are still made in small numbers. The studio also runs a piercing service, done properly and by appointment, which is a rarer thing in Cape Town than it sounds. The two halves of the business fit together: most of what is pierced is eventually filled with something the studio made. Hout Street sits between Bree and Loop, so the shop falls naturally onto a gallery walking route. It opens late for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
