Lemkus has been trading in the Cape Town CBD since 1935 — a multi-generational family business that began as a general outfitter and is now one of South Africa's better-known sneaker and streetwear retailers. The St George's Mall store is the flagship.
What puts it on a First Thursdays route is the fourth floor. Lemkus Gallery runs Residency28, a programme that gives artists studio time and wall space in the building, which makes the shop one of the few places in the CBD where retail and a working residency share an address. The gallery opens to the public for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month, and the store stays open with it.
