Loop Street museum telling the story of South Africa's diamonds and precious metals, from the ground to the finished piece.
The Museum of Gems & Jewellery on Loop Street covers the material history that a great deal of South African economic history rests on: where the country's diamonds, gold and platinum come from, how they are cut and worked, and how a rough stone becomes something someone inherits.
It is a small, specific museum rather than a general one, and it is unusual in Cape Town for treating jewellery as industry and craft rather than as retail. Loop Street puts it a short walk from the Church Street gallery strip and Greenmarket Square. The museum opens for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
