HUB Gallery on Commercial Street is the home of the Spier Arts Trust, which exists to make art careers financially possible — training, commissions and paid work, on the argument that freedom of expression is not much use to an artist who cannot afford to keep working.
The gallery is where that programme becomes visible to the public. The work shown carries the Trust's brief of social transformation, which means the exhibitions tend to be about something rather than simply beautiful. Commercial Street sits at the eastern edge of the CBD gallery district. HUB opens for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
