Cape Town's original speakeasy, hidden behind the Honest Chocolate Café on Wale Street, pouring from a list of over 140 gins.
The Gin Bar was Cape Town's first speakeasy and still works the way one should: you enter through the Honest Chocolate Café at 64A Wale Street and come out in a courtyard bar behind it. The list runs to over 140 gins, which is enough to make the choice a conversation rather than a decision.
The hidden entrance is not a gimmick so much as the reason the room stays the size it is. Wale Street is a block from the Bree and Church gallery strips, so it is an easy end to an evening. The Gin Bar opens for First Thursdays, the CBD's late-opening evening on the first Thursday of every month.
